In Genesis 6:5-13, God tells us that man became full of wickedness and that hearts were full of evil. But Noah was
set apart from all other men. Noah was a righteous man and found favor in the eyes of God. God told Noah that He would destroy
all people and all the earth.
6:14-16, God gave Noah specific instructions on building an ark. This is where we first learn about a cubit. A cubit is equal
to 18 inches and is indeed the most important measure in the Bible.
King James Version (Genesis 6:15-16) And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The
length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window
shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above.
New International Version (Genesis 6:15-16) This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be
450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top.
(For fun, double-check the math. Remember, 1 cubit
equals 18 inches) God knew exactly how many cubits each measurement of the ark was to be. God was very precise!
Still wondering what a cubit has to do with Heaven?
Well, there is another distance that is 1 cubit, or 18 inches. That is the distance from your head to your heart. Remember
that God is very precise! This distance is no accident. Knowing there is a God is not enough, you have to love Him with your
heart. Here’s why –
(the devil himself) knows God. How you ask. Well Satan once lived in Heaven. Satan was in the very presence of God. But because
of his evil ways, Satan chose to fall away from God as did 1/3 of the angels in Heaven. Luke 10:18, Jesus speaking –
“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”.
Satan and his demons (fallen angels) believe in God. They cannot deny what they have seen. James 2:19 – You
believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder.
Here’s where the cubit (18 inches) becomes the key distance between Heaven
and hell. The distance between our head and our heart is about 18 inches. A short distance visually, but spiritually –
they are an eternity apart. To only know in our head there is a God, puts one in the company of Satan.
The Bible unmistakably tells us –
(Deuteronomy 6:5) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
(Matthew 22:37-38) Jesus Speaking - "Love the
Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.
(Mark 12:30) Jesus Speaking - "Love the Lord
your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.
To know God in our head is not enough. God commands us to love Him with
all our heart. God does not want any of us to spend eternity in hell with Satan. There is a real hell, don’t let Satan
convince you otherwise. (2 Peter 2:4) God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell.
Don't miss heaven by 18 inches. This gives the ultimate meaning to "so
close and yet so far". Everytime I use a ruler, I always think to myself that I wish I had invented this instrument.
I would have made it 18 inches (1 cubit) instead of 12. That way everyone who used a ruler could see the distance between
Heaven and hell. A cubit did not come about by accident. In the Old Testament of the Bible, God's precise number of cubits
for the ark's dimensions saved Noah and his family from the great flood. In the New Testament of the Bible, God tells us over
and over we must not just know Him with our head, but love Him with all our heart. A cubit is no accident. God is very precise!
